Best Coding Bootcamps in 2022
(A Guide With 22 Choices)

best-coding-bootcamps

kyle-prinsloo  by Kyle Prinsloo       Last updated Jan. 1, 2022

The web development market is on fire and there's a huge demand for tech skills.

You can either learn these skills through online courses, YouTube, books or through coding bootcamps.

What is a coding bootcamp?

Think of it like a specialized university that's focused on helping you become a web developer/software engineer in a few months.

Are coding bootcamps worth it?

In short, some bootcamps GUARANTEE you a job (or you get your tuition back) and I love this aspect of it.

A lot of us don't need to learn through a coding bootcamp, but if you like structure, accountability, are financially able to invest and you've done your research, then go for it.

Some general notes:

  • Completing a bootcamp won’t qualify you for an executive position in Google, but it will give you enough experience to qualify for an entry-level tech job with a competitive starting salary (at the minimum).
  • Most bootcamps give you a mentor who will be there to give you clarity and answers to speed up your learning curve and make you more accountable for your progress.
  • You’ll have classmates who will be there with you as you go through this journey.
  • Most bootcamps have a vast network of hiring partners so you’ll be one step ahead in the job-hunting game.
  • What matters is if you put in the time and effort needed. Even the best bootcamps aren’t going to magically transform you into a developer if you don’t put in the hours and hard work.

The real differentiators to consider are:

  1.   Learning setup
  2.   Career coaching
  3.   Job placement rate (in 6 months after starting a job search)
  4.   Job guarantee
  5.   Scholarships (Could be online or on-campus)
  6.   Financing options
  7.   Third-party verifiers (A third-party verifies their claimed results)

This guide consists of the best coding bootcamps in 2022 to help you make a better decision (with 22 choices).

It's 6,500+ words long, so grab a fine cup of ☕ ☕ ☕ as you read it.

In a rush? The top 3 are my personal recommendations

Thinkful Full Stack Flex Bootcamp

thinkful-bootcamp-review-flex

thinkful-bootcamp-benefits

I studied a few courses through Thinkful and it’s an amazing school according in my experience.

Thinkful was founded in 2012 with the aim of not getting you a degree but getting you a good job – or you get your money back.

Thinkful’s Full Stack Flex teaches full stack development, which you can take on a part-time basis without quitting your job.

39% of their students have jobs and are undertaking the program online. In terms of age distribution, 40% of the students are aged 25-29 years old with a reported average yearly salary increase of $16,367.

For a full breakdown, I wrote an in-depth review about Thinkful's bootcamp here (and you can also get a discount).

bootcamp-learning Learning setup:

One-on-one mentorship. When learning how to code, you may get stuck on some concepts which are difficult to learn on your own. This approach has been found to help students learn faster.

bootcamp-coaching Career coaching:

When you apply at Thinkful, they don't only teach you the technical skills but they also let you brush up your social skills by directing you to events where your future colleagues are already hanging out.

You will also have five mock interviews with hiring managers to help you prepare for the marketplace.

Their feedback mechanism is a good way to identify gaps that will help you land the perfect job.

job-guarantee Job guarantee:

If it’s been 6 months your graduation and you still don’t have a job, you’ll get a full tuition refund, no questions asked.

job-placement-rate Job placement rate:

With an 80%+ job placement rate of graduates within 180 days of graduation, not finding a job is rare.

financing-options Financing options:

Thinkful offers flexible payment terms.

bootcamp-scholarship Scholarships:

They offer scholarships for women and veterans.

student-review Student review:

I found the mentorship to be the best part of the experience because they provide a ton of information beyond the course content itself. I would definitely recommend Thinkful to any beginner or intermediate tech professional.

student-review Student review:

The remote atmosphere didn't feel like an impediment at all-- clever use of video conferencing and Slack made sure we were all on the same page and communicating in real time. I particularly liked that we were often split into "small groups"-- video chats of 3 or 4 people-- during work time, which allowed us to ask questions of each other and get feedback seamlessly.

student-review Student review:

Springboard was a great experience. Though the concepts and assignments were definitely hard and required heavy investment on time especially as I worked full time, the support was definitely there to help me through, especially from my mentor, Alex. I gained a lot of knowledge through his real life experience and through the support of my career advisor, Allison, I was able to get a job by the end of the program as a data scientist and I am grateful for all the support. Definitely worth investing and going through the bootcamp.

This may not be everyone’s idea of their future career—but my dream literally has come true and is really working. Now that I have tech skills, I do work flexible hours from home as a freelancer. Plus I also recently landed my first 'proper' job in 7 years as a junior web developer, which also allows me to work from home for most of the week... So now, I work from home, earn a decent wage, spend time with my children, code (which I love), and continue to learn.

student-review Student review:

They're making sure that students don't get left behind but that they actually obtain the knowledge that the program offers. Lambda school started a cool program called "Lambda Next" that basically keeps grads working on projects and applying until they find a job. I've never seen anything like it. The content is incredible. The instructors are incredible. The support is phenominal.

student-review Student review:

In December of 2016, I applied for the first group of online students with the Software Guild. I went in with little to no programming experience, but a desire to learn more. I am so glad I did! I went in with not much confidence in my abilities, not just in programming, but in my ability to use my skills in the workplace. The Software Guild gave me a lot of confidence. I have learned the industry standard, and also have been guided in avoiding the common pitfalls junior developers fall into.

student-review Student review:

Everyone I spoke to at The Tech Academy was nice and helped me when I was stuck. Being a remote student, I would watch the lecture and if I got stuck on a challenge I was able to reach a remote instructor via email or by phone. I felt like this gave me a glimpse into what a remote job would be like because in most cases you will get a piece of a project and work on it yourself but if you can always ask someone for help.

I've already gotten so much out of this program, and I'm very much indebted to what, in my honest view, comes across as a genuine concern and enthusiasm for coding and Firehose students' success.
